Hospital Birth ~ LillianOregon's Birth Photographer

Sarah delivered her beautiful baby girl nine days after her due date. Although she was over 50 hours in the hospital, she didn't give up (by that, I mean succumb to the inevitable cesarean that most do after that much time with unsuccessful laboring). She delivered Lillian last night, and I got to witness the amazing process. Someone recently commented how beautiful it was to witness a woman working so hard for someone they have yet to meet...it definitely is undeniable how intense and passionate a mother's love is.

I kept images out of the video that could be disturbing to some, so everyone, please enjoy.

I spent the first few days of this week working at Janie and Jack for their Annual Spring Promotional Portrait Sessions. There were 20 minute sessions booked for three full days, back to back. It was exhausting but absolutely FUN! I met some amazing people and look forward to working with all of my new clients in the future. Stunning...beautiful...dreamy...exactly how I envisioned???...yes, yes, yes AND YES!!!

I inherited this wedding gown awhile back, from a family member, and have had this vision of putting it on a women, with long hair, and having her run through a forest. When I moved to Oregon, we bought a home down the road from an orchard and my vision was altered a bit, as most of my visions are. Recently I got in contact with this woman and told her I had an opening in a week, this is my vision, what do you think?! Thinking I'd never hear back from her, being that it was short notice and a bit wacky in the way I described what I wanted to do...I was shocked when she wrote back and said, not only yes...BUT YES!!!!!! We came together, with less than a day of planning, and created these...I couldn't be more happy with how they turned out. I can't post a lot, but I can sure give a sneak peak...

She also modeled my 1950's birdcage hat I purchased awhile back.

This photoshoot was amazing. First off, the drive took me through winding roads, up and down hills, through vineyards and farms. I was in heaven (I think I was meant to live on a farm, or perhaps did in my past life). ;) As I drove up the driveway I was greeted by a dog who ran along side my car the whole stretch of the long gravel road to arrive at the cabin situated back behind fields and nestled just perfectly in a wooded area. While driving up this driveway, a horse came to the fence that ran along the road and greeted me, and two horses were near the cabin home getting all cleaned up for their photoshoot. I wanted to take photos of every part of the experience so that I could show people what MY heaven looks like.

Anyway, enough of my rambling...here's the real reason I was out there...for Lauren's four year old portrait session. =) Enjoy!!!

What a wonderful birthday for two adorable little girls! All the children (around 20 of them) had a blast and I was all over the place capturing adorable faces of excitement, concentration, celebration and joy! I was definitely in my element (although I probably could have used one of those "parent survival kits", which included ear plugs and advil, towards the end). I'm kidding of course!! I felt right at home in the midst of fun and made many new friends...most of them not much taller than my knees. ;) =)

What better way to capture the people at your parties than to set up a photobooth! Best thing about it is there is no person behind the camera so people feel a bit more freedom and express themselves in an entirely new way. I met these people when they came in to this beautiful suite for a holiday cocktail party. I never imagined that these well dressed, "reserved" (my pre-judgement that was obviously ridiculous) people would make me laugh so hard. How much fun is this?

So, I have to admit, I was very nervous for todays session. First off, it was my first family session in well over a year and second, I was photographing a photographer and her family! BUT, I had a wonderful time and it was great having someone who KNEW what was good/bad and working together to achieve what she wanted was actually very fun!

Now, here's a little glimpse into the photos I took today. The thing is, the majority of the shoot was FAMILY photos, but I can't very well show the family photos until the photographer herself looks over the images. ;) I will post some kiddo pics, however, and a little candid diptych I created.

This morning I had a session with the adorable Kylie. After a rough start, we ended up with some great portraits! The weather was perfect! So glad we were able to do them today, before the weather changes.

My first images from Oregon

Madison turned 9 on the 28th of July. We've been in the process of moving and I decided to wait until we were settled a bit to do her session. While moving in I discovered this amazing orchard right by our home, and a field of wild flowers, both about a mile away. I knew I wanted to use these two locations for my daughter, and for my first session now back in Oregon. It feels so good to shoot again, and to be back home.

We said our final see you later....

We were all busy, getting something to eat, a cup of coffee, after having stayed up all night watching, wondering, waiting for what was to come. My brother, Mom and I were with him at the Hospice House. It was strange, because through the hustle of us brushing our teeth, washing our faces, trying to clean up a little after sleeping in chairs by his bedside and on a vinyl covered couch, taking shifts holding his hand, at one moment, we all came back to him, and sat down. All was quiet. It was at not long after this moment, I remember looking across my Dad lying in bed and nodding to my brother, that this was it. He looked at me with question and I wanted so bad to tell him otherwise. He knew what I meant. From this point on, the three of us sat with him, telling him how much we loved him, how much we would miss him and how amazing of a man, father, grandfather, he was.

The nurses were wonderful. At one point, that morning, there was a shift change, and our new nurse came in. We all looked at her, all of us questioning whether this nurse would be any different than the others. We all surrounded Dad as though we were protecting him from her, out of fear that a person taking care of him may not do it right, may not give him the respect he deserves. We didn't really say a word while she did her job, and then I asked her about his breathing. She stopped what she was doing, looked up at his face, tilted her head while looking at him, and said, "he's growing his angel wings". I don't remember her name, but I'll never forget her.

There's something beautiful about death. I remember writing about it a year ago, not long after Dad passed, how beautiful it was. I sat there, the actual moment, a person I love deeply, "crossed over" to whatever comes after this life. While the selfish place in my heart wanted to never have to say goodbye and to beg him not to leave, every other piece of me knew this was right. In that moment, I finally saw his face fully relaxed, I saw no pain, I saw peace. We all had our hands on him, and while he took his last breath, I could feel his spirit leave his body. I believe I took a piece of it with me the last time I walked out those hospice house doors, and I'm pretty sure Mom and Matt got quite a bit of it themselves.

Such an amazing man, and I still don't believe he's gone. I still wait for his phone calls, I still long to hear his voice...I still pick up the phone when I'm "stumped" about anything really, and think, 'I'll call Dad, he'll know'. One year and three minutes ago, an amazing man left our world.

An Amazing Weekend in Virginia - The State for Lovers...

Melody Smith...I absolutely adore her and am honored to call her a friend.
She invited me to come work with her for two amazing weddings the weekend before last.
I am SO glad I made the trek as the brides were nothing short of GORGEOUS and both of the lucky grooms were completely in love.
(Of course the brides were madly in love as well...it was quite apparent, but I couldn't get past how beautiful they both looked to focus on much more than that). ;)
So, the circumstances made for chemistry that goes beyond words, and photos that are AMAZING!!! =)

I'm not going to bother with any notes or comments, I'd just like to share the beauty. ;)

Michaela was welcomed into the world by Eva and Matt (my brother) on the 7th of November. She weighed in at 8lbs. 3oz. and is 20 inches long. She's beautiful and squishy (just as babies should be). She's strong and healthy and doing great...other than keeping Mom and Dad up all night her first night. ;)

I got the privilege of visiting Eva, Matt and Michaela last night. I arrived when she was a little over an hour old. These photos were taken when she was about 3 hours old.
Mom and Dad are doing great. They are so calm, and proud and glowing. It's such a beautiful thing to witness.

I originally had a trip planned to go to DC for a wedding I was supposed to assist on (shooting). The wedding was cancelled but I made my trip anyway. I've always been in love with DC and couldn't wait to get back. It's a place I used to visit while my Dad was stationed at the Pentagon. It's a place that will forever be engrained in my mind as "my Dad's place". He loved Washington DC...he was a history buff and knew anything and everything I could possibly imagine about every building, monument or memorial. I was able to meet up with a friend of my Dads, someone I worked with (along side my Dad) before I left to join the Air Force. It was so nice to meet up with someone who has been a great, loyal friend to my Dad. I had an amazing time.

Saturday was cold and wet, but Jim, my Dad's friend, took me around to the various places I wanted to go to again, and to visit some of the new Memorials (ie. Pentagon, WWII and Air Force) that I had yet to see. I was able to visit the WWII Memorial while at least a hundred WWII Veterans were there. It was awesome.

It's been a LONG, LONG month, yet the days have flown by so quickly. I can't believe I'm 4 weeks behind. I have a good reason and I'll simply leave it at "family"...the past month has been 100% about family. Although it's been trying and I've questioned everything I've ever wanted out of this whole "photo job", I have a new found passion for what I do. I really didn't realize how important the details of someone's face were until I could no longer see them. I've relearned over this past month that the job I have is amazing. Not only is it a job, it's a gift. Life is SO short. Time slips away from us so quickly. I have the opportunity to give people the most precious gift ever...memories of ones they do, have or will have loved. So, I don't have a lot of images to show but I'll post a few that I've taken.

Thanks, to everyone, who has given me words of encouragement...never, has a single spoken (or written) word gone unnoticed.

Week 34 of 2009, 21 Aug - 28 Aug ** Baby Girl Isabella & Family

Adorable...adorable, adorable. No other word to describe this cutey I got to shoot this past Saturday. Her Mom and Dad were wonderful, so kind and just dream clients. I couldn't have asked for a better family to spend some time with. =)

This morning, at 8:33, Dad took his final breath. He said his goodbyes to this crazy world we live in and went to a better place. What that better place is, I don't know, but I know he's looking down on all the people who were blessed enough to know him.

Rest assured that his passing was peaceful and absolutely beautiful. I never thought I'd use the word beautiful to describe it, but that's exactly what it was. He was taken care of by wonderful doctors and nurses and had Mom, Matt and I by his side, holding his hands and telling him how much we loved him.

Thank you for all the kind words. Dad never knew the impact he had on so many lives. Mom, Matt and I find it comforting to hear the stories and the messages describing the amazing man that he was to each and every one of you.

Waffles & Hospice

Wednesday I went over to make Dad waffles. We're trying to get him to eat and that was something that, for a moment, sounded kind of good. He ate 2 bites I think...I'm just glad I made it over to make him some.

While we were there that morning Avery ran up to the bed and grabbed his hand and said in her sweet little voice, "Opa, I love you", then she was off to play. Olivia was very concerned and sat on the bed with Opa for a bit just watching him and smiling. She was insistent on being the one to straighten up his covers after we re-situated him and got him ready for yet another nap. I hope I never forget the look on their faces, and on Dad's face when his granddaughters were taking care of him. So sweet, yet so incredibly sad, as they should be outside running around the yard playing with him right now.

Dad's in the hospital again today, he went in that evening, the night of the day that I went over and made him waffles. Today we decide who our hospice nurse will be. Dad is fully dependent at this point and we have to make sure he's comfortable. I knew the beginning of the end was coming awhile back, but now the end is near and I don't know if I'm ready for it.

The past couple weeks have been long and worrisome.
Not that I'm completely unrealistic about the whole situation but the changes we've seen lately have really been hard. This disease is evil...pure evil...and watching it take it's toll on anyone, let alone someone you care so dearly for, is the worst thing anyone can go through. All we can do, every day, is take the good and embrace it...right? I'm working on that...much easier said than done.

Dad's been drinking and eating well since my last update. He's staying hydrated and seems to be feeling better, cognitively. He had his regular check up this past week and the doctors took him off all treatment, other than the steroids for the brain. The steroids are there to help alleviate the swelling/fluid around the lesions. Dad's latest scans came back the same as the
ones from May. His chest looks great, everything is stable and the cancer that started all of this is all but gone. His brain is the same as it was. No changes, nothing smaller, but at the same time, in 2 months there has been no significant growth.
At this point, Dad's doctor decided it was best to stop chemo, as it's doing no good anyway.

Chemo can't help the brain as our bodies have a protective barrier that prevents "poisons" from entering that area of our body. Chemo is a poison, therefore unable to pass that barrier and really does nothing for the lesions on the brain anyway. Radiation has been done, and your body can only take so much before it kills you. Dad finished radiation a while back, and his body is physically unable to take any more. So, at this point, there is no more treatment that can be done. The thing is, back in September, when I read about this type of cancer, every website I scoured said that at this stage, a person usually doesn't make it more than 1-3 months. Here we are, almost 11 months later and he's still trucking along. Stubborn?!?...yes he is! =)

The doctors can't put a timeline on anything, he's already defied every odd. They said it could be weeks, months,...who knows with Dad.

Dad decided last night, while at my brothers house for a birthday BBQ, that he wasn't going to sit in his wheelchair, he wasn't going to use it as a walker (as he has been for the past few days), that he was going to walk where he needed to go on his own. Today he's been doing the same...walking. =) So amazing as I worried that his strength was going to dwindle from him not using his legs and I feared that downward spiral was going to "pick up the pace". But no, he's not letting this disease take control. As tired and sick as Dad is, he's fighting like hell. Over the past week or so my brother and I have heard Dad say that he has had moments of just being ready to go to sleep, for good. However, recently, in two separate conversations he told both my brother and I the same thing...he said he just wanted a cure. He's not giving up yet!

So that's it for now. Hopefully only more good news to come. I'll be updating again soon.

Sidenote:
Mom and Dad are private and through this whole process Dad has been quiet about what's going on. I just want to make sure that everyone out there knows that Dad cares for and loves everyone dearly and just doesn't want anyone to worry. I'm sure there are many unanswered emails or unreturned phone calls, but please understand that Dad has always been a talker and writer (anyone who knows Dad knows that)...and he's lost his voice and is unable to think like he used to. Please understand how hard it has to be for someone who has spent his life reading and writing speeches, a teacher, and a public speaker in the Army, to not be able to sit down a write a simple email or hold a conversation. It's not how he wants it to be...it's just how it is.

Week 28 of 2009, 10 July - 16 July ** HAPPY 32ND ANNIVERSARY MOM & DAD!

I have never seen two people fight and work as hard as my Mom and Dad to make it to 32 years. The two of them, while completely different people, compliment each other so perfectly and just "fit" unlike any other couple I've ever seen. They went through their rough patches but always met back in the middle and never gave up.

Dad's been serving in the Army for over 29 years and, I think we figured out, about 60% of their marriage has been spent separate from each other. He finally, after years and years, had the opportunity to be "home", not living in an apartment in VA ( while working at the Pentagon) and they finally got to be together. Unfortunately, cancer was found in Dad and it's been a hell of a battle for the past 10 months. Mom is a cancer survivor as well, like I said, they've been through a LOT during their lifetimes and marriage, but this time, this disease is going to take away what was supposed to be their time together. Finally, after years of living their marriage on opposite sides of the world/country and everywhere in between, this stupid disease is what is going to "break them up".

The cancer my Dad has is in his brain, as they found 10 or 11 months ago. We knew then that the prognosis wasn't good but he had defied every odd, fact, figure and stupid website I scoured. He was supposed to never make it to last Christmas, and here, I got to spend Father's Day with him. Yes, he's changed, the disease has been taking over, but I have had my Dad for pretty much every holiday for one full year (we moved to where they were living and the day after we got here we found out he had Stage 4 cancer that had spread to his brain). We were supposed to have at least 20 or more Christmas' to spend together, being that he's only 54...

Mom and Dad went on a little vacation last week, back to Oregon, their/our home. I saw my Dad a week later and everything had changed. A week ago he was sitting in my recliner watching a movie with my kids and I. Yes, he was tired, but we were able to talk and laugh and look at the kids while watching Lilo and Stitch. I went to see him yesterday and he was in bed, now having trouble walking. Words that aren't words are coming out of his mouth and in our 20 minute conversation, he fell asleep at least 7 or 8 times. My Dad, the talker of all talkers, a speech writer and an officer in Public Affairs couldn't hold a 20 minute conversation, really, he couldn't stay awake for more than 2 minutes at a time. It was horrible, sad, but reality was finally sinking in. I have held out hope, this whole time, because he's defied everything I've read thus far...I had hoped for the miracle that we were all waiting on. Hell, I didn't hope for it, I truly believed it was coming. But my hopes were shattered yesterday when my Dad grabbed my hand, and in one of our 2 minute conversations, looked me straight in the eye and said "I'm so tired, this whole...process. I'm so tired and I just want to sleep." In that moment, I realized that although my selfish needs wanted me to never have to say goodbye to my Dad, it was time to find peace in the fact that soon, my Dad is going to fall asleep and not wake up.

So, while I type this I'm angry and miserable and want so bad to scream about everything that went wrong during his diagnosis and how unfair it is that my Dad is being taken from me and my kids at WAY too young of an age, I'm going to instead say that I wish my parents the very best for their anniversary today and I wish so bad that they could have a million more...cus' they, of all people I know, deserve it.

(I haven't slept, I'm typing through tears and I know this is a ramble that makes no sense...thanks for reading anyway.)

A Reminder

While the focus today, tomorrow and for the next God-knows-how-many-days will be the death of a pop culture icon; while many will mourn, wail and quite literally make fools of themselves over it and while as many will speak endlessly about it, allow me, if only for a moment, to remind us all that others have died this month; others whose lives were cut short; others who leave behind loved ones and whose families will dearly miss them; families who'll suffer with much more dignity and honor than we'll be exposed to on the tube in the coming days.

I had so much fun!! Jill and Jeff had a large but intimate celebration and the whole thing was a blast. They've been great friends for 10 years and they became "more than friends" 3 years ago when they were both single and decided to try out dating. "Hoppy" (Jill's maiden name and nickname everyone calls her) insists during her vows that he will never stop calling her Hoppy. =) He even said "I Jeff, take you Hoppy". <3 It was SO much fun and I feel privileged to have been able to capture this day for them.

It's been a busy week. I celebrated my 9th Anniversary on the strip with my husband. We had a wonderful time and saw so many sights. I really didn't take all that many photos, but it was memorable nonetheless. The bubbles were created for a photo challenge I was selected for. The topic was transparency, and that's what I came up with. Thanks to my sis in law for blowing the bubbles while I took photos. Today we made a trek to The Mirage to see the dolphins, lions and tigers. It was awesome...that is all. Anyway, enjoy my week. =)

I was able to make it to a photo meet up in LA on Sunday. I spent the morning with Mike (Pentax Junkie) walking on a pier, freezing our butts off and drinking coffee. We then went to LA to meet up with 6 of our other friends for day of photos and dorkiness. It was so fun and I am SO glad I was able to go.

I don't often have a spare moment from running the kids to and from school, appointments, the library, after school activities...but when I have a second I like to sew. I actually grew up sewing with my Mom and my Great Grandmother and have always loved doing it.

Maybe it's my slight obsession with children's clothes or just my Martha coming out, but I started making dresses for my girls a few years back. I haven't made a thing since last spring but finally broke out the machine again. It's SO rewarding, almost that feeling of when you take a picture with a pinhole camera and develop it in your bathroom sink, you know, the rewarding feeling you get from creating something start to finish...creating something out of nothing...that's what it is. Ahhhh (gawd I'm a dork).

So, here are some pics of my first dress since breaking out the fancy machine again...

My latest shoot was of 4 beautiful kids, siblings and cousins. They were so cute and fun and even though the boys were not interested in having their photos taken in the least (other than action skateboarding shots), they ended up with some awesome photos.
I love nothing more than candid children's photos, and while we did get a few traditional posed shots, I got to follow them around and capture their spirit, and there's nothing better than that.

So I missed one day and with that, I decided I would do a weekly post rather than a daily.

While I typically rebel against any sort of hype or fad people fall into, I've decided to swallow my pride and jump on the bandwagon. (Don't think I'm some snooty girl...I'm totally kidding with my remarks above. =) ).

So, as of today, January 2nd, 2009, I am going to be creating 365 days of photos. One photo a day for one year for the set, hopefully a great photo each time. I want to challenge myself though, and not just "take a pic". I want to create something worthy of looking at. January 1st, 2010 will be the last photo of the set (maybe that photo will summarize my whole 2009).
